AP is a set of high-level academic courses for high schools around the world that gives capable and motivated high school students the opportunity to take college-level courses while in high school.AP courses allow students to stand out when applying to college, and through AP courses, students also have the opportunity to earn college credit, as well as preferential course selection, or both.

“Performance on AP exams is the best predictor of academic success at Harvard.”

What is the difference between AP and college prep or advanced placement courses?

Many schools offer some advanced placement classes for students, but AP is aligned with the core foundation courses of a university and is therefore equivalent to a college course. The standardized AP exams that students take at the end of the AP program are graded by university professors to verify that students have mastered college-level knowledge and competencies.

Who designs the AP courses and exams? AP courses and exams are developed by a committee of senior college professors and high school AP teachers who are experts in their subject areas and who incorporate the latest subject matter and their professional teaching experience into the development of the AP curriculum.

AP Discipline Committee Members are professors from some of the finest universities in the United States today, including:

Cornell University

Harvard University

MIT

Northwestern University

University of Pennsylvania

Swarthmore College

University of Virginia

Williams College

What do I get for college credit?

Increase your options: College credit or priority course selection can get you into advanced courses faster, earn a dual degree or undergraduate master’s degree faster, and set aside time to study and travel overseas or participate in internships.

Save on tuition: If you score up to par on your AP exams, you can earn credit for equivalent courses at thousands of colleges. With some prestigious U.S. colleges and universities costing around $40,000 a year and foreign exchange rates continuing to fluctuate up and down, imagine how much you will save on tuition with the credits you earn with your AP scores and enable you to graduate as soon as possible. Many students and parents look at this value of AP to reduce the cost of studying abroad.
